OPEN CASTING CALL
CIRCUS ARTISTS, MOVERS, PHYSICAL PERFORMERS
Welcome to the Contemporary Circus Auditions for Void Deck, co-organised by Jonathan Goh (Singaporean contemporary circus artist, graduate of the National Centre for Circus Arts, UK) and *SCAPE.
Void Deck is a contemporary circus creation inspired by the shared ground-floor spaces of Singapore’s public housing estates. In Singapore, a void deck is an open communal space used for everything from weddings and funerals to everyday loitering, play, and waiting.
This project explores ideas of gathering, transition, play, and community through physical performance. It is designed as a collaborative creation process, bringing together circus, movement, and physical performance to develop a shared physical language rooted in urban Singapore.
We are looking to work with 3–5 performers who are open, responsive, and interested in engaging in an ensemble-based creative process. The project welcomes performers from diverse physical disciplines, including circus, dance, and movement-based practices.
The process will include short intensive workshops and rehearsals, leading towards a final presentation. The current timeline is as follows:
September 2026 (short intensive workshops)
November 2026 (short intensive workshops)
January 2027 (rehearsals and final production)
January 2027 (presentation at COMMA Festival, *SCAPE)
March 2027 (potential overseas touring opportunity)
Final schedules will be confirmed after casting.
Audition Details
The auditions will take place on the following dates:
Dates: 11, 12, 18, or 19 May
Time: 6:00 PM – 10:00 PM
(6:30 PM start on 19 May)
Venue: *SCAPE

Gallery (12, 19 May)
Please indicate all time slots that you are available for. Selected applicants will be assigned a slot and notified via email.
Audition Requirements
Applicants are required to prepare a short solo routine (approximately 3 minutes). This does not need to be a fully polished piece. We are interested in how you create, structure material, and make performance choices.
You are encouraged to bring and use your own apparatus (e.g. hoops, juggling balls or clubs, diabolo, rods, ladders, etc.).
There will also be a group component where applicants will work in small groups of 4–5, and may be asked to collaborate with different participants.
Please dress comfortably for movement and bring a notebook and writing materials.
Additional Notes
Due to space constraints, there are no rigging points available at the venue.
If you have aerial experience, please indicate this in the form and include relevant links in your CV or portfolio. If you have your own aerial apparatus, you may bring it and demonstrate how you can work with it without a rig.
Application Information
Please note that this is an application form. Submission does not guarantee an audition slot, and being invited to audition does not guarantee casting in the final production.
Selected applicants will be contacted via email with further details.

What is Void Deck?

Void Deck is a contemporary circus creation inspired by the shared ground-floor spaces of Singapore’s public housing estates. The project explores gathering, transition, and community through physical performance.

Who is this project for?

This project is open to performers with an interest in circus, movement, or physical performance. While prior experience is preferred, we are ultimately looking for individuals who are open, responsive, and interested in collaborative, ensemble-based creation.

How many performers will be selected?

We are looking to work with 3–5 performers for this project.

What happens after the audition?
The audition is part of the selection process and gives you the opportunity to be considered for the project. You will be informed of the outcome after your audition. Please note that being invited to audition does not guarantee casting in the final production.

Will there be a callback?

Yes. Some applicants may be invited to a second callback, which may take place during the audition period. This will involve working with other auditionees to explore group dynamics and ensemble-based work.

Do I need to be highly trained in circus?

Not necessarily. While prior experience is preferred, we are not looking for highly polished or virtuosic performers. We are more interested in individuals who are open, responsive, and willing to engage in the creative process.

Do I need to bring my own apparatus?
You are encouraged to bring your own apparatus if it is part of your practice, but it is not compulsory.
Is aerial considered?
Yes. While there are no rigging points available for the audition, performers with an aerial background are still welcome to apply. If you are able to demonstrate or adapt your practice without the use of a rig, you will still be considered, as the final work will be created collaboratively with the ensemble.

Can I attend more than one audition date?
You will be assigned one audition slot based on your availability.

What should I wear for the audition?

Please wear comfortable clothing suitable for movement.

What is the expected level of commitment?

Selected performers are expected to commit to the rehearsal and creation process. This will include intensive rehearsal periods in September and November 2026, with approximately 6–8 rehearsal days per month.
Rehearsals may be scheduled in concentrated blocks (for example, multiple days within a 1–2 week period). As the work is ensemble-based, consistent attendance is important.

Will I be performing my own act in the final show?

Not necessarily. The work will be developed collaboratively, and material will be shaped as part of the ensemble rather than presented as individual acts.
